In 2018, the paramilitary Pierson Gutierrez Solis confessed to the murder against the Brazilian student and had been sentenced to 15 years in prison, 14 for murder and one for illegal possession of weapons. The legal body, Penal Action, which represents and provides support to Maria Jose DaCostamother of the young woman, pointed out that “no real justice has been done, since there has been no will to investigate the murder and the institutions of the criminal justice system: the Prosecutor’s Office, the Police and the Judiciary have hindered the right of the victim to effective judicial protection and, on the contrary, has promoted impunity for this murder.”
In addition, the victim’s mother continues to ask for justice and a thorough investigation for the “violent death” of her daughter. “Until now, justice has not fulfilled its duty to punish the person responsible for her death,” she said.
«Daniel Ortega has protected the material murderer of my daughter and others involved who have not wanted to investigate. He repudiated the actions of the regime that governs Nicaragua and the justice system that have colluded to keep this case in impunity », he denounced.
