"I have the experience to be a magistrate and serve my small homeland, Zacatecas"

"I have the experience to be a magistrate and serve my small homeland, Zacatecas"

With that experience in mind, in addition to his academic career, he says that he seeks to “serve his small country” and be an electoral magistrate, a position that is not included in the judicial election and that maintains its selection process in the Senate.

Campos has a master’s degree in Electoral Law. He is currently legal director of the Zacatecano Migrant Secretariat, and previously was head of the Legal Unit of the Tourism Secretariat of the State of Zacatecas; He was also director of Legislative Studies and Legal Consulting of the General Legal Coordination of the State Government.

Added to this is his experience as a litigator and as a candidate also in the first judicial election and testing the conditions under which he competes.

Perfect the rules towards 2027

The candidate for magistrate considers that the rules must be improved towards the judicial elections of 2027 not only in order to guarantee parity, but also equity. For example, the spaces that, due to affirmative action, will correspond to judges could be predefined from the beginning.

“If we could previously delimit which spaces will be exclusively for women to continue in this progress and evolution of affirmative actions and not unnecessarily wear people down, I think it would be important to anticipate these issues in advance,” she says.

Although he recognizes that he had the opportunity to compete for a position, he obtained it because the Judicial Reform established that a judicial career was no longer essential to be a judge, he considers that the conditions under which lawyers compete can also be reviewed.

“We are not prepared to campaign. Lawyers dedicate ourselves more to the study of law, often even defending candidates when we have dedicated ourselves to electoral law, but it is not the same to be in front of a camera. Furthermore, we were very limited, we did not have the opportunity to hire media, we could even use social networks, but without any payment,” he says.

He points out that he did not have any experience in running a political campaign, since in his time as a litigator he only worked on designing legal strategies to obtain favorable resolutions for the people he defended, but he still campaigned in the 58 municipalities of Zacatecas with his own resources.

“We believe that this is what has to be reviewed. Now that the reform is coming, I hope these parts are taken into account. As candidates we were limited because we did not have any political party to support us, we were with our own means, with our own resources, with no one to support you other than your acquaintances and your own networks,” he says.

In the judicial elections of June of this year, the nine ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) were elected at the polls; two magistrates of the Superior Chamber of the federal Electoral Court; 15 judges of the Regional Chambers; five magistrates of the Judicial Disciplinary Court; 464 circuit magistrates, and 386 district judges, in addition to 4,361 local level positions in 19 states.
