The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated: “I do not support Maduro, I want a political and peaceful solution in Venezuela.” At the same time, he insisted that he does not support an invasion.
Through a message on the social networkPetro said that, in his opinion, the real reason why Donald Trump’s administration wants to invade Venezuela “is oil.” He indicated that it is the same one that led Russia to start the war in Ukraine.
He explained that those who applaud an invasion in Venezuela will unleash “the bankruptcy of Ecopetrol”, which will result in millions of Venezuelans fleeing their territory to Colombia.
Gustavo Petro’s statements come despite the fact that both nations maintain diplomatic relations and have recently concluded high-level economic agreements such as the export of gas from Venezuela to Colombia.
This week Nicolás Maduro said that these nations are “obliged” to walk together towards independence. Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio stated that her country would support a transition plan in Venezuela that contemplates Maduro’s departure from power: ““I think Maduro would accept that approach.”
