“I buy gold, I buy silver, I buy plating”

"Compro cualquier pedacito de oro"

This is how the businessman screams every time, the one who will later resell at prices closer to abuse, to scams.

HAVANA, Cuba. – My poor country that you have not yet learned to decide, poor little land of ours in which every day I hear, loudly, a man who, retracing the streets of the city, has insisted on warning us that he buys “any little piece of gold” and also “any little piece of silver”, even a very small piece of something that only has a gold plating, a silver plating. Our poor country that does not dare to decide if what it wants is gold or silver, or some plating.

The man retraces the streets of my neighborhood every day; over and over again, always the same, the same in the mornings as in the afternoons, always making noise, shouting, attracting the attention of potential sellers of gold, silver, and also some plating of those metals that some tend to shine more than others. And the man, the buyer of those brilliance, doesn’t stop screaming. The man screams and screams, and we hear him.

We listen to the seller buying pieces of things that show some effulgence; of gold, silver and also some plating that is not silver and much less gold. Every day the same thing, every day an identical song that is accompanied by the appearance of some effulgencies that are false, lying. Our poor country that does not know how to decide, that does not know how to resolve between one thing with a lying brilliance and another that is true.

Poor this Cuba that becomes anxious when it comes to buying and also when it comes to selling, without being able to achieve recognition of those brilliance that are only illusory, that are nothing more than an appearance. And Cuba has lived years and years among those false effulgencies, between apparent brilliance, especially if they are compared to that gold and silver of strange sparkles.

In Cuba, any little piece of gold and also silver is bought and sold, and, as if that were not enough, other things are also traded that only exhibit very strange brilliance and far from the most authentic brilliance, those brilliance exhibited by real gold and also silver, and even those that deceive us with their simple and very false plating. And, who could guarantee that he was not once mocked in this country of deception, on the Island where we have all been scammed by the sellers of false sparkles, of spurious communist brilliance?

Cuba was sold to us as the most precious jewel. Cuba was shown to us in what seemed to be its best brilliance, and, it still happens, with those false brilliance in the same way as those sellers who retrace the streets of my neighborhood, always using the worst tricks, those used by sellers of fake jewelry, and who then try to resell what they get as if it were the Hope Diamond.

“I buy gold, I buy silver, I buy veneers,” that’s how the dealer shouts every time, the one who will later resell at prices closer to abuse, to scams. “I buy gold, I buy silver, I buy veneers,” is how the salesman who passes through my neighborhood every day doing his scams screams.

And this is how the communists also deceived us, those who still do it, those who speak, exalted, of gold and virtues, although until today they could not show anything that went beyond a light plating, a tiny plating that we will continue to pay for a long time as if it were the best gold, and not a plating, as if it were really a revolution of true brilliance and not a little lie.
