What does the law say about women-only places on public transport?
In 2019, in order to inhibit harassment within the Metro and Metrobús the signage was changed to indicate more clearly which spaces are reserved for women and children under 12 years of age.
Whoever does not respect these provisions may be sanctioned with arrest or a fine of up to 2,534 pesos.
Apart from children under 12 years of age, the only exception in which a man can travel in the reserved space is if he is accompanying a woman with a disability.
This was determined in an agreement of the Tenth Collegiate Court in Administrative Matters of the First Circuit, issued in January of this year, after an amparo was filed on January 24, 2020, by a minor who went before the Office of Common Correspondence of the District Courts in Administrative Matters of Mexico City.
