Hurricane season has been less intense than expected

Temporada de huracanes ha sido menos intensa que lo esperado

Santo Domingo.-The 2024 Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico hurricane season has not been as active as meteorological experts expected, who anticipated the formation of between 17 and 25 named storms in the current season.

By mid-September, one of the most active months of the hurricane season, only seven named storms have formed, including four hurricanes.

Last year, September was the month with the most named storms, with a total of nine, but only two of these phenomena have been recorded this season.

The heat of the sea is the main source of fuel for the formation of tropical cyclones, in an area that ranges from the African coasts to the Gulf of Mexico.

However, as the ocean cools as winter approaches, there is less chance of storms forming in the area, experts say.

Due to low cyclone activity, some meteorologists believe that the number of storms this season could be low compared to the 21 that formed last year.

This year, storms Beryl, Chris, Alberto, Debby, Ernesto, Francine and Gordon have formed. Four of these (Beryl, Debby, Ernesto and Francine) have reached hurricane status.

August and September are the most active months of the hurricane season, which will enter a phase of lesser activity starting this week.
