Hurricane Melissa is increasingly approaching Jamaica with catastrophic destructive force and is already making its effects felt on the Caribbean island.
At 2:00 AM (local time) It was 215 kilometers southwest of Kingston, the capital, and was already moving in the direction of Jamaica, heading north-northeast at just 4 kilometers per hour (km/h). Its maximum sustained winds remain at 280 km/h, with higher gusts, and its pressure dropped to 901 hectoPascals, making it still a major Category 5 hurricane.
The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) does not rule out fluctuations in its intensity before it hits Jamaican land, but not significant, and warns of “life-threatening” winds, heavy rain and flash flooding.
