Hunger strikes in Cuban prisons and repressed protests marked November

Represión, Cuba, OCDH

According to the monthly Cubalex report, 165 repressive events were recorded, more than 340 incidents of harassment and an increase in violations against people deprived of liberty in Cuba.

MADRID, Spain.- The Cubalex Legal Advice Center document During the month of November 2025, a total of 165 repressive events in Cuba, which included 343 incidents of harassment and left 138 people victims of human rights violations,

According to its monthly report on the situation on the Island, the most frequent violations were related to people deprived of liberty, a pattern that has continued in recent months. In this category alone, 91 incidents were recorded, including prolonged punishments in solitary confinement, arbitrary restrictions on communication with family members, deliberate denial of medical care, and threats by prison authorities. The report indicates that these practices affect both political prisoners and ordinary prisoners.

One of the most relevant events of the month was the arbitrary transfer of political prisoners from the Combinado del Este to other prisons, even outside of Havana. As a result, several detainees began hunger strikes in protest. Cubalex mentions the cases of José Antonio Pompa López, who remained without food for more than a month, and Yosvany Rosell García Casoheld in Holguín, who also held a prolonged strike demanding the end of disciplinary measures. In total, at least 20 people deprived of liberty resorted to this form of protest during November.

In the political-social sphere, the report documents spontaneous protests in different locations in the country, motivated by prolonged blackouts, lack of water, the collapse of the health system and the abandonment of communities after the passage of Hurricane Melissa. These demonstrations included banging pots and pans, street closures, burning garbage and posters with anti-government slogans. Several of them led to arrests, police summonses and threats against relatives of the participants, making it difficult to know the real number of people affected.

Cubalex warns of a sustained deterioration in living conditions, marked by poor health, the increase in diseases such as dengue and chikungunya, food insecurity and the loss of purchasing power. The report indicates that, although authorities recognized the existence of an arbovirus epidemic, they publicly minimized the magnitude of the associated deaths.

From a territorial point of view, Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Matanzas concentrated the highest number of documented violations. However, the organization clarifies that the figures should not be considered definitive, due to the limitations on reporting in areas without electricity or internet access.

Cubalex emphasizes that the data collected reflects systematic patterns of repression and alerts about the persistence of practices that violate fundamental rights in Cuba, in a context of increasingly deepening economic, social and institutional crisis.
