Opponents of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo rejected the proposal for a “holy truce” requested by Humberto Ortega Saavedra, brother of the Nicaraguan dictator and former head of the Army, to prevent the country from embarking on “brutal chaos.”
Through a opinion article published by Ortega In the newspaper La Prensa, Humberto Ortega proposes that “the national parties must cease the high confrontation of hatred, exclusion”, in a clear call to the opposition in exile.
Daysi George, a member of the Civic Alliance, explained to Article 66 that the Ortega Saavedras consider themselves the owners of a farm and that this farm is Nicaragua, which they can dispose of whenever they want. According to the opposition, Humberto and Daniel Ortega only want to defend the wealth they have accumulated in the country and that is why they are calling for a “holy truce.”

Héctor Mairena, a member of the Political Council of the Blue and White National Unity (Unab), explained that the “analysis” of Ortega’s brother is “interested” because they want to lead Nicaraguans to “convince” that we must wait until 2026 so that in Nicaragua there are free elections.
«In Nicaragua since 2018 what we have been experiencing is a repressive radicalization of the dictatorship. The dictatorship as of 2018 was revealed as what Ortegaism has always been in essence, a totalitarian, authoritarian dictatorship. It is the dictatorship that controls the State that has murdered more than 300 Nicaraguans, it is the one that committed the crimes against humanity, the one that kept a large number of political prisoners,” Mairena told Article 66.
underhanded defense
The opponent urged Humberto Ortega to stop defending his brother in an underhanded way, because that “underhanded defense is complicity with the regime.” He assured that Ortega is revealing himself as an accomplice of his brother, even though he pretends otherwise.
“Let Humberto Ortega not come to ask for such a holy truce opportunistically taking advantage of the air of Holy Week, because what he tells the opposition is that we submit to the situation that Nicaragua is experiencing and that is not going to happen,” he said. .
The opposition member and declared stateless by the regime, Alexa Zamora, assumes this call for a “holy truce” as another of the “desperate attempts” that Humberto Ortega has used, with increasing frequency, “to be able to release the level of pressure” that there is against the regime headed by his brother.
“It is not by chance that this call is made in the context in which the international community has issued an overwhelming report on the commission of crimes against humanity that directly indicate the co-responsibility of the regime,” he said.
George explained that it is urgent to give way to democracy, and not to lead Nicaragua in an economic crisis to extreme poverty, “something that they are very used to doing, regardless of what the people suffer.”
Opponents will continue to denounce Ortega and Murillo
Mairena considers that the “advice” that Humberto Ortega should give his brother is to release all political prisoners, to declare null and void all those political trials against the 222 exiles and to restore the nationality to the 94 Nicaraguans.
“That he release Bishop Rolando Álvarez unconditionally, that citizen liberties be restored in Nicaragua and that all exiles can return with guarantees, safely to our country, which is our right,” he demanded.
«Nicaragua immediately demands a return to democracy. That they release the political prisoners, release Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship was not the one who consecrated Monsignor Álvarez, therefore, it is not up to him to decide where he should go or not, that is an abuse of authority”, George added.
Ortega Saavedra affirmed in the letter that different opponents in exile are “intransigent”, encourage revenge and are categorically opposed to the negotiation “waiting for the Government to explode violently.”
“We are going to continue denouncing the dictatorship, the perpetrator of crimes against humanity, according to the report of the United Nations Group of Experts. What we demand is that in Nicaragua there be justice, there is democracy and there is freedom,” he added.
