Edni López, a university professor and humanitarian worker, was detained at Maiquetía International Airport when she was trying to board a flight to Buenos Aires and has been incommunicado since 10:00 a.m. Just 48 hours earlier, activist and human rights defender Yendri Velásquez was also detained and prevented from traveling to Geneva, and his passport was cancelled.
Edni López, a university professor and humanitarian worker, was detained at Maiquetía International Airport from 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, when she was trying to board a flight to Buenos Aires, where she was going on vacation.
López was able to report around that time that she was prevented from boarding the plane, but has been incommunicado ever since. Her family and friends do not know her whereabouts, and are demanding her immediate release, as they believe she was detained by state security agencies.
Several human rights defenders raised the alarm through social networks asking: “Where is Edni?”who becomes the second person with a work profile in human rights organizations to be detained and held incommunicado at Maiquetía International Airport and prevented from traveling, in a period of less than 48 hours.
On the afternoon of Saturday, August 3, it was reported that Yendri Velásquez, director of the Venezuelan Observatory of LGBTQ+ Violence and human rights defenderwas held incommunicado for more than six hours while he was in immigration to board a flight to Geneva, Switzerland.
Less than 48 hours after this incident, Edni López was detained at the airport. In addition to being a humanitarian worker, she is also a political scientist and poet.
