The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) obtained a sentence for the crime of aggravated human trafficking, to the detriment of 14 migrant victims from Venezuela and Colombia, of which four were minors.
The events occurred in February 2024, when Roany Josué Mérida Moreno was detained in Frontera Hidalgo, Chiapas, by elements of the National Guard (GN), while he was trafficking the 14 foreign individuals in a van.
For this reason, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison after the agents of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, assigned to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Investigation of Crimes Related to Migrants and Refugees, of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Human Rights (Femdh), provided the necessary evidence to prove his criminal responsibility in the events.
In addition to the prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a fine, the suspension of his civil and political rights, and he was ordered to repair the damage to the victims.
In Mexico, one of the criminal gangs associated with human trafficking and smuggling is the Aragua Trainof Venezuelan origin.
