In 1997, human rights lawyer Carlos Nieto Palma founded a Window to Freedom to defend the rights of people deprived of liberty. In 2014, he received recognition from the Canadian Embassy in Venezuela for his work.
Carlos Nieto Palma, founder and general coordinator of the organization Una Ventana a la Libertad (UVL), passed away on August 24. The organization announced this through its social networks.

Nieto Palma, 61, was a lawyer, human rights specialist and university professor. He founded the non-governmental organization Una Ventana a la Libertad on December 10, 1997, with the aim of defend the human rights of people deprived of their liberty in Venezuela.
He saw the urgent need to push for speeding up the reform process in penitentiary centres and this prompted him to create the organisation, whose mission has been to advocate for the modernisation of penitentiary administration and the redefinition in practical terms of the penal system.

In 2014, he received the Human Rights Award 2013 awarded by the “Father Luis María Olaso” Center for Peace and Human Rights of the Central University of Venezuela and the Canadian Embassy in Venezuela.
The organization he founded has been 27 years with national and international recognition in the investigation and documentation of cases of human rights of people who are deprived of liberty, said Yira Yoyote, member of UVL, Radio Faith and Joy.
