Hugo Velázquez and the controversy after his resignation

Hugo Velazquez has not yet formalized his resignation from the vice presidency, which generated indignation among several senators, they also affirm that neither Arnaldo Franco nor Rodolfo Friedman have the profile to occupy said position.

The expectation is growing within the Senate since it is not yet known who will be in charge of taking the position of vice president, the senators have been expressing their dissatisfaction with the names that sound and affirm that none is up to the position.

A possible designation by Congress of a Colorado is what brings a lot of controversy since the most notorious names are Arnaldo Franco, Rodolfo Friedman and also Enrique Bachetta, none of the politicians is confirmed.

Senator Desirée Masi declared that she does not agree with a senator running for vice presidency: “I am not going to vote if it is a senator, I believe that senators have to stay in their position. At this moment we have a fair balance in the Senate, and if one leaves, they make room for a person who is a lawyer for drug traffickers,” she mentioned, referring to Bernardo Villalba.

“We do not consider this to be an adequate replacement, this is a very difficult moment for the country and we are seeing all the criticism that there is as soon as comments are made about organized crime,” he declared. Masi also said that the president has too many good options that could perform well in the vice presidency.

On the other hand, Senator Georgia “Nani” Arrúa also declared her position regarding this situation: “It is irresponsible for Velázquez to announce something and then not do it, because an expectation is generated and apart from that he is already within the term, on the other hand, I also think that they are not managing to agree on who could be the person in whom the president places his trust”. Arrúa said that none of the names that were sounding like good options, since the logical thing is to bring a person with a good profile, who is outside the conflicts and tumult that now exist in the ruling party.

Senator Martín Arévalo, when asked about the unofficial resignation of Hugo Velázquez, said that perhaps he “could be trying to protect himself from all the complaints he has against him and if at a given moment he does not present his resignation, particularly I am going to present a request for impeachment,” he mentioned.

“The Colorado Party makes a difference, the votes of other opponents are not needed,” he said, referring to the refusal of several senators to allow a Colorado to enter the Senate again. Another senator who also gave his opinion on the future appointment was Sthephan Rasmussen: “We hope that the ruling party’s candidate is an irreproachable citizen and not another significantly corrupt one, or with suspicions of corruption like some of the names being considered.”

Velazquez’s resignation was supposed to be made official on Wednesday, but again there was no pronouncement despite the fact that he himself announced it more than five days ago.
