Huancayo: Lack of commitment from citizens to prevent rain disasters

The Civil Defense office assured that the emergencies recorded during these rainy days in the city were already planned and issued alerts to the management of the Provincial Municipality of Huancayo and other actors who are involved in the issue of prevention.

As mentioned by the Risk and Disaster Management Coordinator of the Civil Defense Office, Eng. Fernando Orellana, the Chilca River, the Palian area, Uñas, Cooperativa Santa Isabel and Ocopilla were identified as “vulnerable areas.”

“The Chilca River tends to become very loaded during the rainy season. “It is expected that in the coming rainy seasons, there will be overflows and problems with homes.”said the specialist.

Orellana pointed out that they have 70% progress in cleaning the main rivers of Huancayo, there is still 30% left to do, which will be done next month.

In a field reconnaissance, Civil Defense personnel toured the areas of Palián Uñas and Torre Torre, in the parts where the clearing was carried out, no emergencies were recorded on rainy days; unlike the sections of the Chilca River where there were certain overflows.

“We managed to remove up to 4 tons of solid waste, we found everything from garbage to animal remains”said the coordinator.

The two main problems faced during the rainy season are: the construction of housing in marginal areas and the obstruction of drains in urban areas.

Faced with this, Fernando Orellana expressed his concern about the existence of a large number of homes that do not leave even a meter of marginal area, specifically in Palián and Corona del Fraile.

“We had a commitment from the leaders to have a better order when disposing of their waste and in our case, there is a commitment to order informal commerce,” the official pointed out.
