Huancayo: Doctors report that fly larvae fall from the ceiling during surgery

On two occasions and in the middle of surgery, it was reported that fly larvae fell from the ceiling of the operating room at the El Carmen de Huancayo Hospital. The Medical Staff of this hospital warns that to date the necessary corrections have not been made, contradicting the directors’ version.

The El Carmen Maternal and Child Teaching Hospital, in Huancayo, receives patients from the entire central macro region of Peru. The surgeries performed, including selective and emergency surgeries, occur every day of the week; However, the lack of maintenance on the roofs would have caused the intermediate part between the ceiling and the exterior sheets to become a contamination area that would have become infested with fly larvae and pigeon excrement.

“There was a situation in which, in two surgical interventions, on different days, larvae fell from the ceilings. Alarms were raised and the respective notifications were made; however, so far we have no solution,” reported the president of the Medical Corps of the El Carmen Hospital, Lucinda Matías Malpartida.

Surgeries suspended

This incident (falls of larvae) in full operation would have been recorded between November 15 and 21 of the current year. The staff took the evidence of what happened, but the decision that the administration of this hospital would have made was to close two surgery rooms and operate only one, for emergency cases.

“Selective surgeries cannot be attended to, because only emergencies are attended to. We have 4 rooms of which 3 are for major surgeries and one for minor, but two major surgeries were closed. The mere fact of the presence of larvae is already an exposure to patients, and it does not guarantee safety, because the 4 rooms share the same roof,” added the doctor.

In addition, it was reported that with the removal of the surgical hood, which is found in the operating rooms, the presence of worms and an accumulation of pigeon excrement was evident, which violates the sterilization of surgical instruments.

Seeing patients exposed to contamination, today, the doctors of the Medical Corps reported that they would once again hold a protest in front of this hospital, since they were not listened to with the alerts and notifications sent.
