Huancayo: 159 hectares of crops affected by the hailstorm

The agricultural producers of the Mantaro Valley are the most affected by the impact of last Wednesday’s hailstorm on their crops. In Hualahoyo and Paccha there are 104 hectares (ha) affected, while in Quilcas there are 55 more hectares.

The Sapallanga Agrarian Office has carried out an assessment of the damage caused in the El Tambo district.

According to the data obtained, damages were identified in a total of 104 hectares distributed in different agricultural products. Corn and starchy corn crops have an approximate impact of 63 hectares, followed by 27 hectares of potatoes, 8 hectares of broad beans, 1 hectare of peas, 4 hectares of cultivated pastures and 1 hectare of artichokes.

In the district of Quilcas, the impact is 55 hectares of potatoes and corn.

In the areas of Cochas GRande, Cochas Chico, Vilcoto, Uñas and Huayucachi, technicians continue to carry out evaluations. Although, those affected in Cochas Grande and Cochas Chico have indicated that they lost about 150 hectares of crops.

Last Wednesday, after the intense hailstorm, it was possible to see that many fields were buried by ice.

AFFECTATION. According to technicians, the phenological state of the affected plants is, for the most part, in vegetative development and beginning of flowering, which has increased the vulnerability of crops to adverse climatic phenomena.

In response to this situation, the Sapallanga Agrarian Office has announced that it will proceed with the delivery of foliar fertilizer to affected producers, in order to help in the recovery of their crops.

In addition, the office will send a detailed report to Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance, in order to analyze the possibility of compensation for farmers who have suffered significant damage.

In the markets there is fear of an increase in the price of agricultural products, this is because many producers plant and take their products to the markets for direct sale to families.
