How the digital currency proposed by the government would be used

As part of the strategy to control tax evasion, and as a mechanism to have a report on financial transactionsthe national government would be analyzing the creation of a digital currency in the country.

(Government would create digital currency in Colombia, according to Dian director).

In an interview, the director of the Dian, Luis Carlos Reyes, put this initiative on the table whose purpose would be to avoid the evasion of transactions that are currently carried out in cash and that are not reported to the entities.

This proposal was given after, hours before, the Treasury state that it would include an article in the tax reform project to prohibit cash payments of more than 10 million pesos, an initiative that is even supported by Asobancaria, which has said that a large part of tax evasion is done with large transactions in cash.

The government’s idea about the digital currency would be to facilitate consumer transactions, which could be interpreted as using it in case of making movements and replacing cash, under a mechanism that would be defined.

“This is important to improve the traceability of payments made in the economy”Reyes said in the interview he gave to Semana.

“A digital currency is virtual money that cannot be physically used in any way, unlike the Colombian peso. In addition, it allows great facilities for instant online transactions”, he added.

According to the director of the Dian, the purpose of the new government will be to find the tools to strengthen the rules that punish evaders.
