SOAT 2026 will bring adjustments to their rates: motorcycles and public transportation would pay more, while some cars would have slight reductions.
The beginning of 2026 will come with key changes for drivers in Colombia, and one of the most important will be the update in the price of Mandatory Traffic Accident Insurance (SOAT), which will have new values from January 1.
This insurance, mandatory for all vehicles circulating in the country, will not increase uniformly. As expected, some categories will have significant increases, while others will even register slight reductions, depending on the type of vehicle, its cylinder capacity and the level of associated risk.

Why is SOAT mandatory?
The SOAT covers medical care for victims of traffic accidents, including hospitalization, medications, rehabilitation, compensation for permanent disability or death, funeral expenses and transportation. It does not cover material damage. Driving without this current insurance can generate fines and immobilization of the vehicle, which is why it will continue to be an essential requirement in 2026.
Changes announced by the Government in SOAT 2026
President Gustavo Petro has indicated that the current SOAT system needs structural transformations. Among the proposals is to adjust the insurance value according to the capacity, size and type of vehicle, in order to alleviate the cost for small motorcycles and smaller displacement vehicles, and transfer a greater load to larger vehicles.
These adjustments seek to correct historical imbalances in the system, even warned by the Constitutional Court. In the absence of legislative reforms, the Executive is analyzing extraordinary mechanisms to implement the changes.

This is how the SOAT for motorcycles would look in 2026
Motorcycles, especially low-displacement ones, will be one of the most impacted groups. Although they currently have discounts, the new calculation will take into account the actual health care costs derived from traffic accidents.
- Motorcycles less than 100 cc: They would go from paying about $243,700 to $256,240, an increase of approximately 5.1%.
- Motorcycles between 100 and 200 cc: the value would rise from $326,600 to $343,336.
The increase is explained by the high participation of motorcycles in road accidents and the high cost of health care.
SOAT 2026 price for private cars
For some private car owners, the outlook would be more favorable:
- Vehicles less than 1,500 cc and up to nine years old: The SOAT would drop from $445,600 to $442,440, a reduction of close to 0.7%.
- Decreases close to 1% are also expected for some family cars, campers, trucks and high-displacement motorcycles.
SOAT 2026 for taxis and public transport
Individual public transportation would have significant increases. For example:
- Taxis of less than 1,500 cc and up to nine years: they would go from $268,200 to $281,929.
In general, taxis, urban minibuses and low-displacement motorcycles would concentrate the largest increases within SOAT 2026.
These changes will mark the beginning of a new tariff scheme that seeks to balance costs, risks and sustainability of the system for the coming years.
