How much money candidates receive for votes obtained and why

6,140 pesos is the value that candidates for the Senate and the Chamber will receive for each vote obtained during the legislative elections of March 13.

This works as a monetary replacement that can be claimed as long as the candidates have reached 50% or more of the established voting threshold, according to article 21 of the Statutory Law of 1475 of 2011.

(Also read: Abstention on election day remained above 50%).

The norm establishes that the state will contribute to the financing of the campaigns with the system of replacement of votes.

The law applies both to presidential campaigns and to the Congress of the Republic, whose amount (6,140 pesos per vote) was set according to Resolution 0227 of 2021.

For this year’s elections, the threshold is 3% of the total valid votes cast.

Thus, for example, the candidate Jonathan Ferney Pulido, of the Alianza Verde – Centro Esperanza coalition and who obtained 189,291 votes, will receive a monetary replacement of more than 1,162 million pesos.

Carlos Andres Trujillo, of the Conservative Party, obtained 159,810 votes. Therefore, he will receive an amount greater than 981 million pesos.

María Fernanda Cabal, from the Democratic Center, will receive more than 1,200 million pesos for her 196,865 votes, while Humberto de La Calle, from the Alianza Verde – Centro Esperanza coalition, will receive more than 1,150 million for her 187,307 votes.

It should be remembered that both the Historical Pact and the Conservative Party were left with 16 seats each for the Senate, followed by the Liberal Party, with 15; the Alianza Verde – Centro Esperanza and Centro Democrático coalition, with 14 each; Radical Change, with 11; Party of La U, with 10; the coalition Mira – Colombia Justas Libres, with 4; Mais and Aico, with 1; and Commons, with 5.}
