The thermoelectric plant Catalina Point (CTPC) was the main generator of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) in 2021, despite the problems in the supply of coal and technical failures that it presented during the past year.
23% of the electric power produced by all the centrals of the SENI in 2021 it came from the two CTPC plants, equivalent to 4,453.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh), of the 19,431.1 that were generated in the country in the referred period.
The information is contained in the Annual Report on Operations and Economic Transactions for the year 2021, prepared by the Coordinating Body (OC) of the SENIin which it is evident that the state power plant produced almost 60% more than the next generation company.
From the end of 2021 and the beginning of this year, Catalina Point was at the forefront of the debate, because the plant would be handed over to a technical committee, through a trust, for its operation and management, a measure that had to be postponed by President Luis Abinader after the criticism that arose from the contract.
Although AES Dominicana was the company that injected the most energy through the SENI in 2021, it did so through several of its agents: AES Andrés, DPP (Dominican Power Partners) and Itabo, together supplying these plants with 5,551.6 GWh.
Of the group, DPP was the one with the highest number of electricity generated, with 2,167.1 gigawatt-hours; followed by AES Andrés, with 2,072.8 GWh; and Itabo, with 1,311.7 gigawatt-hours, the three representing 28.5% of the energy produced in the country.
Likewise, the plants of the Electricity Generating Company Electricity Haina (EGEHaina) were responsible for providing 13.6% of the energy last year, equivalent to 2,648.3 GWh, according to the OC document.
The company of Electricity of San Pedro de Macorís (Cespm) and the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EGEHid) completed the list of agents of the SENI that produced the most energy in 2021.
The CESPM was responsible for injecting 1,528.3 gigawatt-hours into the electrical system, representing 7.8%. Meanwhile, hydroelectric plants generated 1,470.6 GWh, equivalent to 7.5% of the total.
In total, the aforementioned agents of the National Interconnected Electric System they contributed 80.4% of the total energy produced in 2021, equivalent to 15,652 gigawatt-hours.
