Ham bread is one of the dishes that has been part of the Venezuelan Christmas meal for more than a century. Unlike the hallaca, its preparation is practically the same in the four cardinal points of the country.
According to the Venezuelan gastronomic journalist Miro Popic, author of The new book of ham breadthe recipe was invented in 1905 at the Ramella bakery in Caracas.
Originally, it was just a bread stuffed with ham that was cooked in wine, cloves, pineapple, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Over time it became popular, other ingredients were added, such as raisins and olives; and more recently, some bakeries offer the puff pastry or turkey ham versions.
