Carnival is the party pagan par excellence of Venezuelans. There is no corner of the country where this date that precedes the beginning of Christian Lent is not celebrated. It arrived with the colonizers and over time it changed and the holding of parades, private dances, the election of queens and the popular black costumes became a tradition.
The carnivals of El Callao (Bolívar), those of Mérida (Mérida), Carúpano (Sucre), Puerto Cabello (Carabobo), Barquisimeto (Lara) and Maturín (Monagas) became very prominent and tourist attractions in those regions. Today, after more than 20 years of revolution, few survive. What is still maintained is the costume parties in schools and the elections of queens.
