How much did the Tokyo Olympics cost?

The Tokyo Olympics they cost $13.6 billionUS$5,900 of them contributed by the organizing committee and US$7,700 by public administrations.

Games Executive Director Toshiro Mutopresented the final financial balance of the Games before the IOC assembly that was held this Thursday in Beijing, where on Friday the the Winter Games. The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee closed its operations with a balanced budget of US$5.9 billion.

The figures offered by the director put an end to the mystery of how much the Games would finally cost and how the expenses would be distributed, after the increase derived from the postponement due to the pandemic. According to the contract signed by the IOC and the host city, the local authorities, in this case those of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, had to assume the potential deficit or additional expenses incurred by the organizing committee.

Muto stressed that, despite the extra investments that the covid forced, final spending was below the $15.4 billion estimated before the Games began.

Both the director and the president of the organizing committee, Seiko Hashimoto, gave the IOC assembly a detailed summary of the development of the Games, its legacy and its sporting, social and environmental milestones.

The winner collected her trophy amid shows of emotion and exchanged long compliments and thanks with Thomas Bach, who was also an Olympic medalist, in fencing, and who referred to Hashimoto as “my dear fellow Olympian.”
