A few days after the writer and journalist Jorge Fernández Era denounced reprisals against his imprisoned son, the Cuban regime imposed on him this Friday home confinement that he must serve for 39 days. In a publication On his Facebook profile, the intellectual confirmed the measures for him and his wife that were communicated to them at the Aguilera police station in Havana.
Fernández Era explained that the “detention” lasted three hours and that the security agents instructed him on the charges for the crime of disobedience, whose case will be attended by the Municipal Court of Arroyo Naranjo. The writer assured that the ban on leaving the country remains in force, to which is now added the home confinement that he is “obliged to comply with from this minute until June 6.”
He ironized about the supposed precautionary measure for his wife, who will have to go “alone to guard the CDR; look for chicken, hot dogs, mincemeat, detergent, oil, and cigarettes at Coco and General Lee; throw away the garbage; and support the work of the deputies from our constituency”.
The writer assured that the prohibition to leave the country remains in force, to which is now added the home confinement that he is “obliged to comply with from this minute and until June 6.”
In a new publication, the writer regretted that he could not fulfill his promise to sit this Saturday at noon at the José Martí monument in the Central Park, in Havana, in a peaceful protest against the harassment suffered by his son. Home confinement “prevents me from doing it in person, but not from my soul and thought,” he said.
In addition, he denounced that the smear campaign has involved his son’s mother and grandmother, while calling on the “sanity, intelligence and dignity” of Miguel Díaz-Canel to cease the pressure against his family and reproached the organizations that “supposed to represent the people”, but are “accomplices of infamy with their silence”.
This week, the writer denounced on social networks reprisals against his son Eduardo Luis Fernández, 22, who is serving a sentence for robbery with violence. According to his account, the young Cuban was transferred from the Toledo 2 prison to El Chico, without the prison benefits that he had obtained for good behavior, as a measure of pressure on him, although the authorities told him that it was to “protect him from the father’s influences.
On several occasions, Fernández Era has had problems with State Security, including arrests, interrogations and harassment.
Recently, the writer broke his relationship with the digital magazine The Young Cubaafter its director, Harold Cárdenas Lema, rejected his Sunday column in which he ironized the US pro-Castro organization Bridges of Love and State Security. The management of the medium, in which he had collaborated since February 2021, considered that the text was a “disqualification of the projects and institutions on which we prefer to make political analyzes and not treat them as satire.”
On several occasions, Fernández Era has had problems with State Security, including arrests, interrogations and harassment. The journalist holds the State authorities responsible for what could happen to his son and considers that the Government’s actions are practices “typical of a fascism entrenched in the soul of a nation.”
In addition, he has requested support from the Government of Spain and its Embassy in Cuba to intercede for him and grant him a visa that allows him to go to Madrid to present one of the books he has published and which, according to him, he began to manage since before the police harassment began.
