Hotels in Nuevo León recover with 65% occupancy due to meeting tourism

Monterrey, NL. Traditional hotel occupancy and informal accommodation in Nuevo León they are recovering from the pandemic, reaching its maximum level in July 2022, with around 65% occupancy, according to data from Datatur and AirDNA, an analytics tool for Airbnb hosts. This, due to the impulse of the business tourism since March this year.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, traditional hotel occupancy fell to 5% in April and May 2020, and to a lesser extent informal accommodation dropped to less than 50% in March 2020, but reached 60% occupancy in May of that year. As of July 2022, both hosting formats are around 65% occupancy.

This is indicated by the analysis “Current situation of the tourism industry in Mexico, where are we and where are we going?”, by Francisco Madrid Flores, director of the Center for Tourism Research and Competitiveness, of the Anahuac University, who presented the study within the framework of the Ordinary General Assembly of the Mexican Association of Hotels of Nuevo León.

It is worth mentioning that hotel occupancy in 43 destinations with more than 2,000 rooms, from January to September 2022 reached 56.5%, this meant a negative variation of -5.2 percentage points compared to 2019.

With the closure of non-essential sectors, such as the Convention, Exhibition and Congress centers, the income of the Nuevo León tourism sector had a drastic drop in April 2020 and bottomed out in May of that year; However, when some industries rejoined, it began to recover in June 2020 and had its first maximum in February 2021.

In August 2022, the variation in revenue from the hotel industry showed an increase of 28.2% compared to the same period in 2021.

On the other hand, the income and the number of hotels, not only did they recover pre-pandemic, but they have almost doubled the numbers. In 2019 there were 867 units in Nuevo León, with income of 5,333.7 million dollars, so far this year there are 1,639 hotels, with income of 9,957 million dollars.

Only the figures for 2022 compared to the previous year, the number of units increased by 33.03% and revenues increased by 57.7 percent.

It is mainly due to the fact that this year Congresses and Exhibitions have been held that had been postponed due to capacity restrictions during the pandemic.

In 2022, events such as the Alacero Summit 2022from November 16 to 17 in Pabellón M, with the face-to-face attendance of more than 500 executives from 58 steel-related industries, as well as conferences to which they could connect virtually from all over Latin America.

Last week, the Urban Parks Congress was also held, an event that Nuevo León won years ago and which brought together participants from Asia, Europe and other countries. From this Tuesday, November 22 to November 27, the Apostolic Congress will take place, which brings together people from all over the country at the Arena Monterrey.

At the macroeconomic level, Tourism GDP has not yet fully recovered from the effects of the pandemic, from a drop of -25.4% in 2020, it went to a drop of -13.0% in 2021 and during the first half of 2022 it still lags behind. of -2.9% in Tourism GDP.

Foreign currency income had a reduction of -18.4 billion dollars during 2020 and 2021.

The expert commented that as a result of a panel carried out by the Center for Tourism Research and Competitiveness of the Anahuac University, 43.3% estimated that the recovery of the tourism sector to pre-pandemic levels will occur in the fourth quarter of 2022, another 40% believe it will be until 2023 and 16.7% estimate that it could occur after 2024.
