Hospital Santo Tomás will expand hemodialysis room

The expansion of the hemodialysis room at the Santo Tomás Hospital (HST) is a project based on the needs of the patients and to be able to timely attend to the problem of chronic renal failure, indicated Elías García Mayorca, medical director of this facility. of health.
He explained that the adaptation will have 14 chairs to offer the hemodialysis service that will cover the demand of 72 additional patients.

He pointed out that the current room has 3 cubicles with 12 machines (care for 36 patients), which includes 3 shifts per day; Monday, Wednesday and Friday which are repeated on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, covering about 220 patients who receive the service.

The project has an approximate cost of B/. 119,000 which includes the remodeling of the living room, bathrooms and dressing rooms.

He mentioned that they also maintain permanent attention from a nutritionist, psychiatrist and social workers and any other specialist that the patient needs free of charge.

Diego Rey Urriola, head of Nephrology at Hospital Santo Tomas, said that 30 new patients per month are received at this facility, which is why an ambulatory peritoneal dialysis program is maintained and 190 patients are cared for in the pre-dialysis clinic for the control of her illness.

Dr. Rey Urriola explained that not only is the patient given free hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis treatment, but also consultations and medications that are very important to them, such as the one indicated for the control of phosphorus, hemoglobin, calcium, etc.

The population must be aware that hypertension and diabetes are diseases that can be controlled if properly treated, both have an impact on kidney function, so specialists recommended paying due attention.
