The Hospital de Clínicas José de San Martín, in the week of the respected delivery, reported this Monday that more than 40% of births are still by caesarean section and that “The basis of respected childbirth implies the consent of the patient prior to each intervention during labor” and “the choice of a companion if you wish throughout the process until the birth of your child.”
The respected delivery begins with the admission of the patient to the health center and is regulated by Law 25,929, which came into force in 2005, the institution detailed, and highlighted that the population most affected by obstetric violence are the younger patients and those with a lower sociocultural level.
“The difference between this form of care and the way it was previously carried out is that the mother’s wishes were not taken into account and all the care was based on the decision of the health team,” said Darío Didia, head of the Obstetrics Division. of the Clinical Hospital.
“The respected delivery makes a clear difference and does not give rise to any possibility of exerting obstetric violence towards the patient, neither physical, nor verbal, nor emotional, which in other times in some private and state centers has received the woman during the labor,” said the specialist.
However, despite this legal framework that proposes solutions to the situation of many women who face a pregnancy in situations of vulnerability, the hospital warned that there are still several indicators that warn about the need to continue working intersectorally to improve the health of the woman and newborn: high percentage of caesarean sections; cultural and economic accessibility; pre-conceptional, prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal reproductive health care and education; high teen pregnancy rate; abuse of medicalization and pathologization of natural processes, among others.

And he added that the law of respected childbirth is in line with Law 27,611 of the 1,000 days of the newborn.
“From our institution we hope to be able to satisfy the wishes of our patients, taking into account not only their expectations regarding childbirth, but also in the health care of the mother-child binomial,” he said.
Finally, Didia explained that there is also a percentage of patients with some type of obstetric pathology that can involve risks, so decisions are made by health professionals “always giving explanations about the reasons why behaviors are taken and seeking the understanding and acceptance of mothers with the aim of not neglecting mother-child health”, she concluded.
