The honorary consul of Ukraine in the Dominican Republic, Ilona Oleksandrivna requested this Monday an emergency meeting with the president Louis Abinaderand at the same time asked for help for the hundreds of nationals who are stranded in the country.
“Louis Abinader, please listen to me. I am the face of Ukraine, I need an appointment with you. Where are you right now,” said the diplomatic representative through tears.
“We, right now, greatly need help from all Dominican citizens. Right now, my country has a very big war, and Dominicans have a big heart,” he added.
He indicated that the aid will be channeled through the Tony Cabeza Fernandez Foundation, and it can be clothing, medicine, medicines, food and other supplies.
The consul said that the aid would serve to provide assistance to approximately 1,200 Ukrainian tourists who have already been dispatched from hotels in the Dominican Republic.
The collection centers set up in the country are coordinated by the aforementioned foundation, and are located in Arroyo Hondo, in Plaza Jazmine, in front of the Nacional supermarket.
There is also another in the province of El Seibo, where so far 80 tourists have been given accommodation who have already completed their vacation period and were stranded.
Ilona Oleksandrivna said in tears that she has not slept for five days after Russia invaded Ukraine.
They also request sheets, water, mattresses. Later, they stated that they will make a bank account available to the population so that anyone who wishes to make financial contributions to purchase medicine for those wounded in the war.
They reported that the situation that exists right now with the more than 3,000 tourists is that 1,200 have already completed their length of stay.
“The pressing situation is that insurance does not cover him, due to the war situation. What we demand is that this be dealt with in a joint commission with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Migration and another state agency”explained Carlos Mesa, immigration advisor to the honorary consul.

Representatives of Ukraine estimate that there are more than 500 Ukrainian residents in the Dominican Republic.
In the Dominican Republic there is no embassy of the Republic of Ukraine.
