Yadira Sánchez is one of the Cubans who managed to reach Islas del Cisne in Honduras last Wednesday. This woman told the local media The Press that the raft they built for their journey hit some reefs and broke, so they had to jump into the sea to reach the shore. “We lost everything, we are only with the clothes we wear.”
Through their social networks, the Honduran Naval Force reported on the transfer in a ship of the naval squadron of 22 irregular migrants from Islas del Cisne to the Castilla naval complex. The Cubans were given “medical care and clothing and food in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Human Life.”
The naval authorities detailed that after complying with the protocols, the 22 people were “delivered in good health conditions to the Trujillo Migration delegate” to define their immigration status.
Yadira Sánchez confirmed to local media that the National Migration Institute “granted them a safe-conduct that allows them to stay five days in Honduras.” According to official figures, between January 1 and February 7 of this year, 2,209 island nationals have been detained: 884 in the municipality of Trojes, 675 in Danlí, 648 in Choluteca, and 2 in Tegucigalpa.
Sánchez along with six other rafters separated from the rest of the group. These Cubans are now in La Ceiba trying to reach the border to continue their journey to the United States. He said that they left the Island on January 24 with the idea of a better future for themselves and their families.
