The Honduran government decreed this Saturday (01.14.2023) a “sanitary emergency” for 90 days, after detecting avian influenza in pelicans located on the Caribbean coast, recorded a decree published in the Official Gazette.
The emergency period, which may be extended according to epidemiological evolution, was determined “in order to prevent, control and eliminate the presence of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in domestic and wild birds“, the decree specifies.
The decision was adopted by the government “after confirming the presence in the national territory of the avian influenza detected in wild aquatic birds identified as brown pelicans on the beach of the city of La Ceiba”, in the Caribbean, about 300 km from Tegucigalpa.
The authorities had reported at the beginning of January two sources of infection of avian influenza H5N1 by locating more than thirty dead pelicans.
The Honduran government asks the population to maintain and strengthen prevention, control and epidemiological surveillance actions for early detection” with the aim of “eliminating the focus and preventing its spread to other geographical areas of the country”.
