A group of homeless people who were located in the streets of the township of Bella Vista, were transferred by authorities from the Mayor’s Office of Panama, the Governor’s Office and other institutions, to the Kiwanis gym in El Marañón.
These people were given medical attention, and grooming that included a haircut and delivery of clothes, in addition to the option of agreeing to go to a shelter where they will receive professional care to help them overcome drug dependency.
The day, in which the governor of the province of Panama, Carla García; the manager of the National Mortgage Bank, Gean Marc Córdoba; and the substitute representative of Bella Vista, Caterina Sáenz; in addition to personnel from the Urban and Home Cleaning Authority (AAUD); the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Health, the Mayor’s Office of Panama and the National Police, began at the intersection of the Transístmica and El Paical and continued on the bridge in front of the National Brewery.
Subsequently, they moved to the bridge of the Martín Sosa highway, where Governor García affirmed that it is one of the operations that are carried out every month in critical areas of the capital, which are complemented by the cleaning work carried out by the AAUD and the MOP.
He stressed that these operations are carried out through the “Date your Opportunity” program of the Municipality of Panama, with which homeless people are approached and taken to the El Marañón gym, where they are treated and after a medical and social evaluation, They offer them the opportunity to undergo a recovery and resocialization program.
For his part, Córdoba stressed that these operations seek to mitigate the impact of homeless people in the capital city, who will also be given the opportunity to undergo a recovery process, and for which a local has already been located. where in the near future they will be offered accommodation, in addition to a process of accompaniment and follow-up so that they can lead a normal life again.
“The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, asked us to find a way to find a solution for these people. The goal is to provide them with a space where they can stay and receive care, so that they can overcome their drug dependency”, he pointed out.
The day of care for the homeless and cleaning also included the area of Vía España at the height of Samuel Lewis avenue and Ricardo Arias street; in addition to Obarrio and via Argentina.
