The city of Holguín, capital of the province of the same name, dedicates its Culture Week to the poet Dolphin Pratswho was recently declared the winner of the 2023 National Prize for Literature.
This celebration, which reaches its 40th edition, opened this Monday with verses from the poem “Humanity”, included in the mythical collection of poems Language of the dumbfor which Prats was censored at the end of the sixties.
The verses now came in the voices of the Mestizaje company, as a tribute to the author of poems such as “To celebrate the ascent of Ícaro”, whom, according to a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN), the event is dedicated.
Delfín Prats, born in the town of La Cuaba, on December 14, 1945, has not been the center of too many tributes in his city, except those that are usually organized eventually by young people from the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS).

It was they, who from their editorial La Luz edited in 2017 all of Prats’ poetry under the title: Dolphin Prats. surface gloss.
To introduce him then, his countryman Ronel González defines him in the prologue as an “intense and meticulous” poet.
Prats was also responsible for the anthology The hurricane and the palm (Ediciones Holguín, 2017), where, with the purpose of revering great poets in Cuba, it brings together representative texts of Cuban poetic expression.
In this way, he chooses creations by José María Heredia, Juan Clemente Zenea, José Martí, Dulce María Loynaz, José Lezama Lima, Virgilio Puñera, Gastón Baquero, Heberto Padilla and Juan Carlos Flores, up to a total of 28.
Prats was in the past a close friend of the also Holguin Reinaldo Arenas, who immortalized him in various characters in his books. The AHS has also paid homage to Arenas, exiled and suicidal in New York, for more than 20 years through a short story contest called Celestino.
The Holguín Culture Week will have book presentations, talks, projection of feature films and the documentary Cosme Proenzaa huge game with timeby the director Alejandra Rodríguez Segura.
This celebration also commemorates the 271st anniversary of the granting of the Title of City and Government Tenure and recalls the four decades of the Manuel Dositeo Aguilera Municipal House of Culture.
