President Gabriel Boric officially announced the beginning of the payment of the historic debt to the teachers Chileans, fulfilling a promise that seeks to repair damage carried over from the dictatorship. The measure is materialized through Law 21,728, enacted this year, which provides an economic contribution to teachers affected by the loss of salary benefits. This single payment reaches 4.5 million pesos, distributed in two installments.
Historical debt to teachers:
The process will benefit more than 57,000 teachers and will be carried out in six payment periods, from October 2025 to January 2031, under the responsibility of the General Treasury of the Republic. The first installment, corresponding to 15,560 beneficiaries, will be delivered between October 17 and 22; the second, in January 2026.
Each payment will be made by bank deposit or cash withdrawal, according to each teacher’s record. The President stressed that this step does not seek to obtain votes, but rather to “do justice to the teachers that were violated during the dictatorship and forgotten by democracy.” In addition, he clarified that the benefit implies giving up on collective lawsuits before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, although the Ministry of Education is already working on a legal solution for those specific cases.

During the official ceremony, the president of the College of TeachersMario Aguilar, described the day as “a historic day for Chilean teachers.” He stressed that, although financial compensation does not erase the damage suffered, it does represent symbolic and emotional relief for thousands of teachers who waited for justice for 44 years.
