It was a long process and today it is a source of pride for the team that was in charge of his care.

This event marks an important milestone for both the Foundation and the department of Cundinamarca, being the first time that a chick of this species has been born in the region and the first achieved by artificial incubation in the present millennium.
“On this occasion, we took the egg and transferred it to the artificial incubators located in the El Cóndor building,” explained Fernando Castro, coordinator of conservation and research at the Foundation. Caring for the egg involved a series of precise measures, including the management of controlled temperature, regulation of relative humidity and constant monitoring of the weight to ensure the correct formation of the embryo.
In danger of extinction
The Andean Condor is an emblematic species that faces serious threats due to its low numbers. A study carried out a few years ago by the Neotropical Foundation of Colombia revealed that there are only 63 confirmed specimens of this species in the country. Although it is estimated that there could be between 100 and 150 condors in the entire national territory, this figure could not be verified.
For the team in charge of caring for the chick, this achievement represents a source of pride and a significant step forward in the conservation of the Andean Condor. Rafael Torres, manager of the Jaime Duque Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm: “The only thing we want is for those who visit us in the park to share the joy that all of us who work here feel and that, in the future, we can ensure that Colombia continues to have condors that symbolize freedom as a nation.”
This event is not only a testament to the success of conservation efforts, but also underscores the need to strengthen the national action plan to protect this emblematic species. The Jaime Duque Foundation will continue its work, hoping to inspire the community and future generations to protect the Andean Condor and other endangered species.
