Historian Henry Navas: April 19 was the libertarian cry against colonial domination

Historian Henry Navas analyzed the events of April 19, 1810 in the program Al Aire broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión, “that day there was a telluric movement, which some rightly call the libertarian cry, as a consequence of 300 years of collapse of the colonial order,” he said.

Although some say that “there were 300 years of love and peace, there is nothing more false than that,” he explained that during the years of dominance of the old Spanish empire, “there was not a moment when this continent was occupied, invaded, conquered, and then colonized , in which they will not rise, will present us in absentia”.

The historian points out that the former Captaincy General of Venezuela was made up of “the natives, our aborigines. Subsequently, entire families brought from the African continent in conditions of slavery, who also rose up and the whites already born here, who began to distance themselves from the Spanish empire, were incorporated into the population, extracted from subhuman conditions. These three ethnic components are going to be mixed with blood, sweat and tears”.

What happened on April 19 was the result of historical circumstances that occurred in Spain, which were taken advantage of by the oppressed inhabitants for the path to freedom: “an attempt has been made to present a story through which, first, everything was a haven of peace and secondly, that those who rose up were only the Creole whites, nothing more false”.

He believes that today the knowledge of the history of Venezuela should be deepened, taking into account the cultural diversity that grew in the country for generations.
