The young Cuban diver Luis Gustavo Cañabate was given a medical discharge after spending two months hospitalized as a result of a dangerous accident.
Cañabate, 19, fell from a third floor during the early hours of November 12 at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín Higher Performance Athlete Training School (Esfaar) in Havana.
After his fall, he was hospitalized in critical condition and transferred two days later to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital, where he was treated throughout this time and will be evaluated again in the coming weeks.
A note from the Institute of Sports Medicine, quoted through the portal Hitaffirms that, two months after the accident, the young athlete is “much improved”, for which he received a medical discharge.

“Control X-rays were taken on his right hand and they were satisfactory. In addition, clinical checks were carried out and he is doing very well with the use of an external mini-fixator”, says the official information, according to which “21 hyperbaric chamber sessions and magnetic bed treatment were completed”.
In accordance with Hit, Cañabate “must return in three weeks to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital to be re-evaluated. Then it would be possible to remove the miniexternal fixator and continue with a hyperbaric chamber and rehabilitation therapy”.
The statement concludes that the diver, a native of Camagüey, is being “treated with antiarrhythmics by cardiology criteria, although he no longer has arrhythmia.”
The athlete himself thanked on Facebook all the people who gave him support and cared about his state of health, especially “all health professionals”, his family and the staff of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER).
“I hope to return to training soon,” he said.
Luis Gustavo Cañabate is considered one of the greatest talents in diving in Cuba.
In 2021, he won the silver medal in the men’s individual platform during the Junior Pan American Games held in Cali-Valle, Colombia, where he also won gold in the mixed event along with Anisley García, Carlos Daniel Ramos and Laydel Domínguez.
