Hialeah and Miami: two Cuban cities with different streets

Hialeah coronavirus, Calles, Miami

MIAMI, United States. — Hialeah, popularly known as “The city that progresses”, is not only unique for the large number of Cubans who inhabit it, but also for having a different street numbering system than the one established in Miami-Dade County.

It is a peculiarity that, although it does not only distinguish Hialeah, is unique in Miami-Dade, where most cities number their streets based on the quadrant system adopted by the county.

In the case of Hialeah, it manifests itself as follows: NW 122 street in the county is also W 68 street, just like NW 103 street and is, in turn, West 49.

On the subject he investigated The New Heraldwhich recalls that “The city that progresses” adopted a different street numbering system after its foundation.

Herald historian Seth Bramson, author of the book The Curtiss-Bright Cities: Hialeah, Miami Springs & Opa Lockapointed out to the Miami newspaper that “the founders of Hialeah, James Bright and Glenn Curtiss, began to name the streets of the city from scratch, from where Hialeah begins…”.

Founded in 1900, most of the numbering in Miami is based on “point zero,” with Flagler Street dividing the street grid between north and south, and Miami Avenue dividing it between east and west.

Review The New Herald that, in its beginnings, Hialeah was made up of plots of land that were acquired by its founders, a scenario that began to change in the twenties of the last century, when the area began its gentrification.

In the specific case of the difference in numbering, this lies in the fact that there were no main streets or highways that connected Hialeah and Miami.
