Rudy Tomás Francisco Díaz (30) and Yenny Fernando García (41) were rescued around 3:00 pm on Monday, after remaining more than 12 hours trapped on an islet in the Chanchamayo River due to the rising flow. PNP, Firefighters and Serenazgo troops tried to cross the river without success.
The decisive intervention was carried out by a group of young people from the Perené district, known as the ‘Perené Pirates’, led by Ronny Solís and accompanied by three teenagers aged 22, 16 and 14, who risked their lives using ropes and inner tubes to reach the islet and save the couple. Both rescued people were transported by ambulance from the Chanchamayo Integrated Health Network to receive medical attention.
The operation aroused the admiration of the population, who recognized and rewarded the bravery of the young people. The authorities reminded the population to avoid risk areas, especially during the rainy season, when the flow of rivers increases.
