In recent weeks, San Miguelito has been involved in a wave of violence between gangs that has left several dead, where the police have intervened with operations in different parts of the district to control the area, in an interview with Radio Panama, the candidate for the free application for the Mayor of San Miguelito, Irma Hernández, referred to this problem that affects all citizens of the district.
“San Miguelito is more violent and more dangerous than ever, these are figures that exceed the figures for January of previous years, including the Homicide Prosecutor’s Office says that San Miguelito is the one that reported the most homicides in 2022 and the streak continues in 2023,” said Hernández.
According to statistics so far in 2023, 57 homicides have been reported nationwide, 27 more than in 2002 and most have been registered in the Capital City, Colón and only in San Miguelito 19 homicides have been registered this year.
“The cause that today San Miguelito is suffering from this level of violence and insecurity is the result of abandonment for decades and decades, it is the result of bad management, it is the result of a childhood, of a young man who did not see more alternatives to to have a dignified life, to have a life with an economic solution, due to the few opportunities that exist and they are trying to cover the sun with one finger, now there is a deployment, forces like Senan, Senafront but the damage has already been done”, he commented Hernandez.
