The National Arts Foundation (Funarte) will participate, for the first time, in the Worldwide Music Expo (Womex) 2024, one of the most important fairs in the global music market. The action is part of Funarte Brasil Conexões Internacionais, a strategic initiative to promote Brazilian music on the international circuit.
Brazilian participation will be celebrated with a tribute to Hermeto Pascoal, who will receive the prestigious Womex Awards.
“This is the first time that a Brazilian musician has been honored by the Artist Award in this important world music space that is Womex. Hermeto Pascoal and his work are among those riches that need to be celebrated in our Brazilian music, which is an expression of singularity and a device for encounter, dialogue and cultural connection and which, therefore, needs policies that strengthen this fundamental link with the world”, informed the president of Funarte, Maria Marighella.
At 88 years old, Hermeto will be the first Brazilian to receive the award in the award’s 25-year history. As part of the official concert program, pianist Jonathan Ferr will present his Urban Jazz inspired by Afrofuturism.
The Brazilian delegation, made up of 28 agents from the music sector from all regions of the country will go to Manchester, England. Womex will be held in the city of Manchester, England, from this Wednesday (23) until Sunday (27) .
Brazilians will participate in panels on the Amazon Festival Circuit, music and video games, the live music market in Brazil. The presence of Funarte represents a milestone for the internationalization policies of Brazilian arts, one of the axes of the National Arts Policy.
“The internationalization of the arts is central to our primary mission: to deliver to the Brazilian people a national policy that reflects the specificity and complexity of our expressions. Artists and arts agents have broken boundaries and built a sensitive offensive that is an asset of democracy, rights, freedoms and not only economic wealth, but of sovereignty and affirmation of different narratives”, stated the president of the Foundation.
Festivals
The circuit’s eight festivals place music at the center of the global climate debate, focusing on themes such as biodiversity and representation of indigenous, black, quilombola, women, caboclo and riverside communities.
Rio musician Vic Hime will participate in a panel on music and video games and, in another session, André Bourgeois, from São Paulo, will discuss the live music market in Brazil for foreign artists.
The fair, which attracts more than 2,600 professionals from 90 countries, is a prominent environment for strengthening creative and commercial music networks and creates an experience for curators, publisher managers, among others, to discover new musicians, projects and reflect about alternative programming opportunities.
