Hermann Escarrá: We must be cautious with the installation of the ICC office

Hermann Escarrá shows constitutional amendment to put the communes

Hermann Escarrá considers that the installation of the ICC office in Caracas “does not generate the confidence that it should give”, because on occasions they have made “unfounded accusations”. On the other hand, he highlighted as positive the visit of the president of Iran to the country for the signing of several agreements

The deputy of the National Assembly elected in December 2020, Hermann Escarrá, opined this Monday, June 12, that although the installation of an office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Venezuela is progress, it should be viewed carefully. “Sometimes they have made baseless accusations, baseless complaints and baseless statements” against the country, he said.

Escarrá, in an interview with VTV, expressed that for him, the visit of the ICC “does not generate the confidence that it should” and he hopes that the prosecutor Karim Khan “keeps his word.” He recalled that President Nicolás Maduro supported the establishment of that office and also emphasized that Venezuela voluntarily signed the Rome Statute.

However, he hopes that the ICC Prosecutor’s Office can “correct his position” and move towards what would be his purpose: to guide the protection of human rights in Venezuela.

He insisted that there are times when these types of offices can become “the extended arm of the United States”, although he clarified that this does not seem to be the case with the ICC.

Regarding the visit of the president of Iran to Venezuela, Hermann Escarrá considers that it is a “great opportunity” for the country to reciprocate with Tehran for all the collaboration they have given the country. For this reason, he stressed that the visit of Ebrahim Raisí will have “good results”, due to the signing of various agreements.

He affirmed that President Nicolás Maduro has been working more intensely to strengthen international relations to bring Venezuela tools and opportunities to improve.

On the other hand, Escarrá said that a deputy earns around 80 dollars and that is why he does not understand how a legislator, with that salary, can have access to sumptuous goods such as buildings or yachts; reason for which the Domain Forfeiture Law was approved.

Also, the parliamentarian took the opportunity to reproach the statements of former US President Donald Trump about appropriating Venezuelan oil and joining the speech of the other officials of the Maduro administration in affirming that this was a “confession.”

He stressed that he was in favor of politically disqualifying all those opponents who supported the request for sanctions by Trump and the United States since, in his opinion, they do not want Venezuela.
