On October 1 and 2, a new edition of Heritage Day will be held. This year the actress Concepción “China” Zorrilla will be honored, on the centenary of her birth. With the slogan “Culture of two shores”, it seeks to promote the world of the Río de la Plata with various activities throughout the country. “It will be a River Plate party worthy of the honoree,” said the Minister of Education and Culture, Pablo da Silveira.
The presentation of the 28th edition of Heritage Day was held on May 19 in the Executive Tower assembly hall. The general director of the Nation’s Cultural Heritage Commission, William Rey Ashfield, and theatrical director and producer Mario Morgan also participated.
Da Silveira maintained that this date has become an unprecedented popular phenomenon and pointed out that it is the cultural activity that mobilizes the most people in one day. “It is a party that all Uruguayans love very much and it is very beautiful to live,” he remarked.
The minister considered China Zorrilla one of the most talented women in the world of art, theater and cinema, and recalled that she comes from a family that contributed a lot to Uruguayan culture. In addition, he highlighted the enormous popularity that she obtained on both shores and pointed out that this year the cultural values of the region will be promoted in honor of her figure.
The emphasis will be on the vision of the Río de la Plata as a cultural unit and for this, activities are being organized in the two embassies, as well as a series of tributes, which will include important personalities who knew Zorrilla and shared jobs with her, indicated the hierarch.
Rey, meanwhile, specified that Heritage Day is an extremely participatory day, which allows the varied integration of these assets, documents and testimonies. He added that they are working with various organizations to specify a very rich agenda, because the figure of Zorrilla and the slogan “Culture of two shores” opens up an important range of possibilities.
