The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo wanted to show that everything is normal in Matagalpa. On February 14, the day the 161st anniversary of being elevated to a city was celebrated, he tried to sell a festive city with its happy citizens. “Nobody here forgets that our Bishop Rolando Álvarez is kidnapped and they have destroyed the Diocese,” says a Matagalpina.
In this city, a large number of parishioners still go to the Cathedral and all the Matagalpa parishes to pray for an end to the “brutalities” that the Ortega-Murillo regime executes against the religious in particular and against Nicaragua as a whole.
“What this bad government seeks is to supplant the prophetic voice of the church and the people of God, with slogans that feed hatred, incite fury and unbridled anger,” says a religious from this city.

“I invite each good son to pray and ask for our bishop, for each brother consecrated to the Lord and who suffers unjust confinement, criminal exile and every humiliation that comes from the perverse boot,” the religious exclaimed.
Scenario dominated by the dictatorship
The surroundings of the San Pedro de Matagalpa Cathedral, especially the Paseo Juan Pablo Segundo and the Morazán Park, the old historic center of the city, have become the favorite scenario of the Sandinista dictatorship for staging endless parties, boisterous fairs and any type of activity that interferes with religious celebrations.
“We must be patient and tolerant in the face of the provocations that Sandinismo makes with its evil noises, and that is what the Lord calls us, not to fall into those dirty games of the devil and his servants,” added the religious.
The pearl of the north celebrated 161 years of holding the category of city and even before 2018 a mass officiated by Monsignor Rolando Álvarez was even celebrated, which this year could not be.
Today is all different. The government vigilantly represses masses, prohibits traditional processions, threatens priests with jail or exile if in their homilies they dare to ask for justice and freedom for their bishop and democracy for Nicaragua. “While the whole country suffers jail, just like our bishop, there can be nothing to celebrate in this city,” said the religious.
party of few
On Tuesday there was an act to elect notable citizens, all sympathizers of the regime. At night the party was held from park to park with five platforms along seven blocks of the central avenue.
For the following days, other eminently recreational activities were scheduled, such as the equestrian parade and sporting events, meanwhile the Bishop of Matagalpa resists “hell” in La Modelo prison and others suffer outside the home, free, but without a homeland or family close.
«To celebrate in the midst of all this is to offend God, his church, the same human being who believes that he can arrest, kill or decide the fate of another human being. This causes sadness, how bad, I don’t think that was Sandino’s dream,” said a religious from Matagalpa.
