The former president of the PPD, Heraldo Muñoz, spoke in conversation with The Counter in La Clave about the latest statements by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic, about the 30 years that the Concertación governed the country. In his opinion, this period was “the best 30 years in the contemporary history of the country.”
“These are fortunate statements, because if one looks at the evidence, the last 30 years have been the best 30 years in the contemporary history of the country. The progress made in the democratization of the country, the advance in social inclusion, in the elimination of poverty. We received the country after the dictatorship with more than 40% poverty and we managed to reduce it to 8.6%,” he said.
Along the same lines, the former foreign minister admitted that “it is true that with all these advances, this progress, abuses, inequalities persisted, and that is why there was a social outbreak.”
After the declarations of the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic (PL), who maintained that “balancing the judgments is something that this generation is learning”, as a result of the 30 years of the Concertación, Muñoz pointed out that “it is important that recognize how important they were.
“It seems to me an appropriate gesture, a good recognition made by those who did not live through that entire period or in the circumstances that occurred. It must be remembered that Pinochet remained Commander-in-Chief for 7-8 years, and that until 2016 we had the binominal “Until the end of the Lagos period, we had designated senators. With all these limitations, the advances were notable; not enough, because abuse and inequality still persist,” he added.
“I feel very proud to have participated in this process,” concluded former Foreign Minister Muñoz.
