Hemorio records a 25% drop in the number of donations in September

The State Institute of Hematology of Rio (Hemorio) reported that it went on red alert for lack of blood donations in September. In all, the blood center accounted for about 25% fewer bags collected compared to the same period in 2021, when the state of Rio de Janeiro was experiencing a critical period of the covid-19 pandemic.Hemorio records a 25% drop in the number of donations in September

According to the institute, if the population does not mobilize, major emergencies in the state can feel the impact on their care during the events of the end-of-year festivities.

“This is a very critical moment for Hemorio and for the state. In this period of popular mobilization due to the elections, the participation of the population is also essential in this very important solidarity gesture that is the donation of blood. health care a few months before the end of the year festivities”, said, in a note, the director general of Hemorio, Luiz Amorim.

During the last month, Hemorio recorded a drop of 2,000 blood bags compared to the same period last year. So far, just over 70,000 donations have been collected throughout 2022, 5,000 less than the previous year. The donation is essential to guarantee support for the main emergencies, maternity hospitals and health units in the state of Rio.

who can donate

To donate blood, you must be between 16 and 69 years old, weigh at least 50 kilos, be in good health and carry an official photo ID. Young people aged between 16 and 17 can only donate blood with the permission of their parents or legal guardians. They must also have an identity document from the person responsible. It is not necessary to be fasting, just avoid fatty foods in the four hours before the donation and do not drink alcoholic beverages 12 hours before.

Volunteers cannot have had hepatitis after the age of 10, nor be exposed to blood-borne diseases (syphilis, AIDS, hepatitis and Chagas disease). Pregnant or breastfeeding women and drug users cannot donate blood. In addition, those who were infected by covid-19 can donate after 30 days of the end of symptoms and those who have already received the vaccine can donate after seven days (48 hours in case of CoronaVac).
