the opposition has practiced a stubborn denialism during the last three years. It began as a way to hold on politically and gradually became an unsettling ontology: the existence of any action of the new government that could be considered positive or successful is objected to. Nothing that has been done in the framework of the 4T is plausible. Every act is seen as failure or as a threat.
Denialism began with the 2018 election. After the vote hit them like a thunderbolt, conservatives began to craft a narrative based on the fleeting nature of what happened. The avalanche of votes for AMLO was the result of being fed up; it was an unexpected reaction that could soon be reversed. Mexicans would quickly wake up from his electoral outburst. It was a temporary stumbling block for the prianists.
They did not understand what had happened to them. The electoral victory was the fruit of a long work among the people, of an incalculable number of exchanges with millions of Mexicans, of house-to-house visits. Exposing the situation and the solutions that López Obrador had conceived while touring every corner of the country, a great political movement was born and a new popular mood was formed. All of this was what caused the 2018 election outbreak. It was not spontaneous, but the effect of a meticulous political construction. Yes there was a dose of fed up, even this was modeled and conducted. Experience shows that reaching that point (willingness to change and common vision of the country) can take a lot of time and effort. And in parallel, it was required to organize and mobilize. AMLO and his movement did all that.
Once that point was reached, the outcome was predictable. Since the obradorismo had become the leading force, it could soon become the dominant force, according to Gramsci’s famous formulation.
Here lies one of the keys to AMLO’s recent speech in the Zócalo. The new popular awareness is one of the factors that guarantee the solidity of what has been achieved. It is the closest thing to the (always unfinished) irreversibility. But achieving consensus in broad layers of society is a task that requires constant renewal. This endless work demands good government and, furthermore, the organizing force of a party. It is one of the biggest challenges to give continuity to the 4T: maintain the organic structure of Morena.
Currently, Morena has practically disappeared from the national scene. A certain paralysis is noted in his ranks, a decline that may make him of little use for political work by 2024.
What compensates the 4T and Morena is that the opposition is weighed down by denialism. The prianism He has not made the slightest effort to understand what has happened over three years. Their organic intelligentsia helps them very little. They hit nothing: all their catastrophic forecasts have failed. In truth, the intellectuals of the right also live in a negationist feast. A whole political pathology. It is enough for them to deny that the government has achieved anything in terms of health, social welfare, public works, etc. And so. Consequently, there is not the slightest possibility of understanding where the high approval of the President comes from.
While any achievement of the government is denied, opponents have retreated to the media sphere and the territory of social networks. From the real world to virtual space. In this area they are investing fabulous amounts of money. From there they are carrying out their battles against the government, with some results. But, as far as it can be seen, what has been achieved is not enough to close the gap with the 4T in terms of citizen sympathy. The most recent attempt (the house in Houston) had the clear aim of hitting the central column that sustains the good reputation of the 4T: the honesty of its top leader. Breaking it, everything would come crashing down. But the case has been just as strident as unfounded. It dissolved into thin air.
For the opposition, the time is dramatically shortened. And with almost everything against. Without a discernible project, without candidates, it only proclaims that AMLO governs badly and is not making any positive changes. Distance from the real and entrenchment in the virtual. Unrestrained denialism that hides a counterfactual raving. The achievements of the 4T are visible to any person with minimal equanimity. And there are many, including the spectacular social support programs (pensions, scholarships, etc.) that benefit millions, old and young. AMLO’s approval may fluctuate a bit, but it will not substantially change his powerful position. Therefore, if things continue in this state, it can be predicted that this year, and in 2024, the opposition bloc will suffer severe setbacks both in the virtual world and in the real world.
