Commitment 46 of the 100 that Claudia Sheinbaum made last October 1 in the Zócalo of Mexico City proposes a healthy life so that Mexicans stop consuming junk products.
“In schools, workplaces, public spaces, there will be an extensive educational program to reduce obesity, hypertension and diabetes. No more consuming junk products,” he said in front of thousands gathered in the Plaza de la Constitución.
The fight against “junk food” comes from the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. On September 30, the Secretariats of Education and Health published the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the “Agreement through which the General Guidelines to which the preparation, distribution and sale of prepared foods and beveragesprocessed and in bulk, as well as the promotion of styles of healthy life in foodwithin every school of the National Educational System”, which gave 180 days for its implementation.
These measures for a healthy life are given because there are 5.7 million students, between five and 11 years old, who have obesity or overweight problems, in addition to 10.4 million students, between 12 and 19 years old, according to the National Health and Nutrition Survey.
What does Healthy Living propose?
The Secretary of Education explained the measures that will be implemented to turn schools into healthy spaces:
Ban on junk products. The sale of ultra-processed foods with low nutritional value will be prohibited in public schools.
“What are these products? Well, very easy, the ones with the stamps that we all know. The seals that are established in Standard-051. No product that has these seals can be sold inside schools, it’s that easy,” he said.
Drinking water. So that students do not opt for sugary drinks, parents will be guided so that the resources they receive for school improvement are used for the installation of drinking fountains.
