Health of Basque on hunger strike for identity documents deteriorates

The Basque Asier Guridi Zaloña has insisted that he intends to continue his hunger strike until he has a valid legal identity in his hands from Spain

The Basque citizen Asier Guridi Zalona, who received refugee status by the Venezuelan State in early December 2021, is serving 27 days on a hunger strike before the Spanish Consulate in Caracas so that they can grant him a passport of that nationality.

Guridi Zaloña, who days ago denounced harassment by members of the Chacao Policeindicated that his health has deteriorated due to several episodes of dizziness or signs of loss of consciousness due to variations in tension.

He also stressed that, although the harassment of Polichacao seems to have stopped, he was attacked “by two misfits” on April 16. He also said that the attention of the Venezuelan Red Cross -which promised to review his health status- has been irregular, since in the last ten days he barely received a visit “to take his blood pressure and leave without taking a pulse.”

The Basque has insisted that he intends to continue his hunger strike until he has a valid legal identity in his hands from Spain, since the “civil death” to which he says he is subjected also affects his current partner and his son in the Basque Country.

In this way, Guridi Zaloña seeks to have access “to fundamental and inviolable human rights for all human beings” such as legal identity, since without them he cannot work, have property, equality before the law, or marry; among other things.

«There are very few inviolable human rights that can be restricted to human beings without distinction and always under judicial pronouncement, these are the cases of house searches or deprivation of liberty! People cannot be left without legal identity because de facto they are prevented from accessing the fundamental and inviolable human rights of all human beings! », He refers in a press release.

In December 2021, Guridi Zaloña received refugee status from the Venezuelan Stateafter a first hunger strike also carried out in front of the headquarters of the Consulate General of Spain in Caracas as a claim for an alleged refusal of the consular authorities to issue him his passport, what he claims is a violation of his rights.

The Consul General of Spain in Venezuela, Juan José Buitrago, then explained to Guridi that his passport could not be processed due to a European arrest warrant. Regarding the situation of his son, he pointed out that he only had to introduce the birth certificates of both the father, the mother and the child, duly legalized and apostilled, as well as other requirements.
