Four other cases were confirmed in Campeche, four more in Oaxaca, one in Sinaloa, one in Querétaro, four in Sonora and one in Zacatecas.
“In all these sites we have managed to demonstrate that they have measles and we have contained the cases around where they have been diagnosed,” said the secretary.
In Chihuahua, where there are more cases of measles in population that was not vaccinated, five people were hospitalized: three for pneumonia, one with encephalitis and one by liver injury. A person died.
“There has been a death in a patient who had nothing more measles, but had renal damage, liver damage and also had comorbidities, such as diabetes, etc., and was contaminated – he was not vaccinated – with the measles virus,” he explained.
In that federative entity of the north of the country a vaccination siege is applied to contain the outbreak: doses against measles are placed to all contacts of people infected with health professionals.
In addition, the health sector applies vaccines throughout the country to prevent more infections. From January to March 2025, 715,277 measles vaccines, rubella and paperras were applied.
“However, insisting that people get vaccinated, especially right now that the holiday period comes, where there is a greater mobilization of people and also the people who travel, for example, to the United States, where there are many more cases of measles than those we have here,” he added.
Although measles cases are increasing so far this year, Kershenobich indicated that in the last two periods less infections were reported, so they hope they decrease in the next few days in some states, such as Oaxaca.
Until now, of the total contagios confirmed nationwide, 27.9% were hospitalized (97), most of pneumonia; 50% are over 20 years old and the other half are children and adolescents.
The Secretary of Health recalled that from April 26 to May 3, the first national health week will be held and insisted on completing the schemes, especially the doses against measles and coughing, a disease that also registers more cases in 2025 than in previous years.
“So, what is very important to us is to recommend the vaccination scheme again,” he reiterated. “Because if we achieve 90% of vaccination throughout the population, that controls by itself, the measles outbreak,” he added.
Boys and girls from one to nine years old, also adolescents and adults between 10 and 39 years; Health personnel from 20 to 39 years and those in contact with positive cases must be vaccinated against measles.
The vaccine against coughing is recommended to children from one to seven years, pregnant women from the 20th week of gestation and health personnel in contact with children under 1 year.
