A bill presented in Congress seeks to make a psychological evaluation mandatory prior to marriage in order to detect possible violent behavior in future spouses.
The proposal, called “Marriage without secrets”, was promoted by the representative of the Chamber for the Green Alliance, Olga Lucía Velásquez, who affirms that this measure could be crucial to reduce femicides, gender violence and sexual abuse in the country.

The initiative is designed to identify disorders such as uncontrolled anger, pathological jealousy and violent behavior in conflict resolution, among others. Velásquez points out that these factors are often triggers of domestic violence, of which the main victims are women. According to the statistics cited by the parliamentarian, 80% of cases of domestic violence affect women, and in the majority of femicides, the aggressors are the partners or ex-partners of the victims.

Other requirements within the proposal
In addition, the proposal contemplates the presentation of a record of excessive consumption of alcohol or hallucinogenic substances by the couple, as well as the reporting of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In this way, the law not only seeks to prevent violence, but also promote a marriage based on transparency and mutual well-being.
The project is now awaiting discussion in the Senate, where the debate on mental health and domestic violence in Colombia is expected to continue.
